Hebrews 9:23-24
Thus it was necessary for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these rites, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf.

Christ did what we could not do, went where we could not go, and accomplished what we could never earn. This is the message of the Gospel.

Christ did what we could not do: offered an acceptable sacrifice to God. The old sacrificial system provided for a day of atonement (Yom Kippur) when the High Priest would enter into the Most Holy Place with a blood offering. But even though this priest could become ceremonially clean, he was still a sinful human and could never offer an acceptable sacrifice for others who had also fallen short of God's glory. But Christ, perfect in every way, could be both the Great High Priest and the spotless sacrificial lamb.

Christ went where we could not go: into the very presence of God. In the old covenant, a priest was required to mediate between God and the people. But Jesus, alive in the power of the resurrection, is seated at the right hand of God, and He is the Door that gives us permanent access to God. There is no longer a need to offer sacrifices, for none could compare to the blood of Christ, and because the way to God has been forever opened. "For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all..." [1 Timothy 2:5]

Christ accomplished what we could never earn: salvation. God does not forgive our sin because He suddenly decides our mistakes do not matter. No, forgiveness is offered to us because the punishment for our sin was paid by Christ. [Isaiah 52:13 - 53:12] The debt has been erased from my account, because Jesus has ransomed me. Not only that, but the perfect righteous life of Christ has been credited to me, so that God sees me as blameless before Him.

This is the marvelous love of God, that "while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." [Romans 5:8]
