Hebrews 9:25-26 Each week, thousands of churchgoers participate in a ritual that claims the very body and blood of Jesus Christ are broken and spilled out repeatedly. Their belief is that every time they participate in the Lord's Supper, that Christ is sacrificed again and again. However, as the author of Hebrews has clearly pointed out, Christ was sacrificed once for all. The Lord's Supper, or communion, is an important part of the new covenant. We take the bread and the cup in remembrance of all Christ has done as the Lamb of God [John 1:29] and each time that Christ's followers eat and drink the Lord's Supper together they "proclaim the Lord's death until he comes" [1 Corinthians 11:26]. Jesus has infused the celebration of the Passover deliverance with an even greater meaning: the eternal deliverance of God's people from the bondage of sin through the sacrifice of Christ. "For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed." [1 Corinthians 5:7] Just as there is no need to return to the system of animal sacrifices as detailed in the Old Testament, there is also no need for Christ to sacrifice himself again. His perfect sacrifice was accepted by God and, as a result, Christ is now seated at the right hand of God. [Hebrews 10:12] This is an important distinction to make, since the Levitical priesthood would remain standing day in and day out, always offering sacrifices to the Lord. But Christ, after his once for all sacrifice, took a seat. The atoning work of Christ was completed through his death on the cross. There is no need for Christ to die again and again, for he has already "put away sin by the sacrifice of himself." Perhaps it was Jesus who illustrated this fact the best when, as he bled and died on the cross, uttered these words: "It is finished." [John 19:30] |
