Proverbs 18:1
Whoever isolates himself seeks his own desire; he breaks out against all sound judgment.

Left to our own devices, we always do what seems right in our own eyes. We enter in temptation blindly, and engage in sin, having the desires of our own hearts in the forefront. We hastily condone or overlook anything that might caution us to stop and plunge headlong into sin. Take a few moments to think over your own life and see if this is not true.

Do we not lean toward sin? When temptation enters our mind, do we not avoid seeking the counsel of others? We intentionally cut ourselves off from the accountability and godly wisdom that we need. Friends, “the heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick” [Jeremiah 17:9]. This is why we are to “make no provision for the flesh” [Romans 13:14]

One of the ways to avoid sin and temptation is by making use of the fellowship of believers. God intended for His people to be together – He even calls us a body – and one of the reasons for this “sacred assembly” [Leviticus 23:3] is for the purpose of holding each other accountable. We must “encourage one another and build one another up” [1 Thessalonians 5:11] in order to avoid sin and glorify God.

When temptation comes your way, do no neglect the counsel of others. Do not isolate yourself and break out against all sound judgment. Rely on the Word of God, and the words of trusted brothers and sisters in Christ, to keep you from sin. .
