Proverbs 18:9
Whoever is slack in his work is a brother to him who destroys.

According to the Bible, laziness is destructive.

Although it should be common knowledge among Christians, it may surprise many to discover that the Bible speaks of salvation and service together. There is no separation between being saved and the command to serve. Consider carefully the words of these passages:

“…how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.” [Hebrews 9:14]

“Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.” [1 Corinthians 12:5-6]

“…Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.” [Titus 2:14]

"…how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God…” [1 Thessalonians 1:9]

When we don’t work, we are being disobedient to God. Our work does not earn our salvation, and it does not impress God. But it does signify that our lives are yielded to him and his will.

It has been said that idle hands are the devil’s playthings. The point behind this statement is that when we are doing the things the Lord has called us to do, we avoid many unnecessary temptations and pitfalls. The issue is not one of busyness, but of obeying God and doing the things which he has created for us to do.

With good reason, James tells us that “whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin” [James 4:17]. Doing nothing is the same thing as causing harm. Laziness is destructive.
